-Equipment selection
-Fishing techniques for salmon and trout
-Lure selection
-Reading the water
-Egg curing
-Tying knots and leaders
-Angler ethics
-Trip planning and safety

-Taught by Dave Atcheson and Bo Ansel.

Mon, June 21

8:00am - 11:00
-River biology,
salmon/halibut characteristics, life cycle, habits taught by Dr. Dave Wartinbee.

11:00am - 12:00
-Overview of Kenai River fishing regulations and habitat issues.
-
Additional safety clothing and equipment for fishing. Taught by Gary Turner and Dave Atcheson.

1:00-7 pm
-Walk-in river fishing for both king and sockeye salmon (dependent upon the runs) with Dave Atcheson, Gary Turner, Richard Kelso, and Paul Tornow.

7:00pm
-Dinner


Tues, June 22

-Alaska wildlife habits: moose and bear safety taught by Larry Lewis, Alaska Department of Fish and Game

11:00-12:00pm
One hour classroom introduction to lake fishing, taught by Dave Atcheson.

1:00-7:00 pm
-Guided river fishing by boat for king salmon. Trip guided by Bo’s Guide Service.

7:00pm
-Dinner

All day
-Fly-in lake and river fishing with Dave Atcheson, Gary Turner, Paul Tornow, Tony Lewis and Richard Kelso.
- Students taking this course for credit may be required to demonstrate casting techniques, proper gear selection for various situations, site selection and their criteria for choosing it.

Thurs, June 24

8:00am-9:30am
-Saltwater techniques for halibut/salmon with Bo Ansel.

9:30am-12:00
-Boat safety and cold-water survival taught by Joe McCullough, Alaska State Parks.
-Will include personal floatation devices, throw ropes, sea anchors, emergency signaling devices, and rescue scenarios.

1:00pm-3:00pm
-Caring for your catch: fish-filleting, freezing, smoking, canning with Dave Atcheson and Linda Tannehill.
-Students taking the class for credit will need to demonstrate how to fillet, freeze, and prepare fish.


Rest of day
-Fishing on own or side trips to museums, cultural sites.
